New Feature: Custom Markers!

by alayton at 7:54am

It's taken several weeks to get right, but the single most requested feature is finally ready to be revealed: custom markers! It's taken a lot of trial and error, but I think we've come up with something both easy to use and powerful - the default markers are just an automatically included custom set now, for example.

Marker sets menu

To help you get started, let's walk through an example of how it can be used. To get started, the first thing you need to do make sure you're logged in - otherwise, you can't create or edit any markers. Once you're logged in, open the Marker sets window from the Controls menu in the top right corner of the map.

Marker sets window

In the Marker sets window, you can share, show, hide, or remove sets from you map. If you're allowed to, this is also where you edit them. It will also show you all of the sets you've created and let you easily add them to your map. What we're interested in right now is creating a set, though. To do that, just click the Create set header to expand that box, and it'll show you the form that will create the new set.

Create marker set

The create set form is super simple. The name field is just what the set will be called in the set list and in password prompts. The password is optional, and if it's left blank, it won't be required. If you do set a password, it'll ask people for it when they try to add it. If they're logged in, they won't have to enter it again unless it changes, but logged out users will have to enter it each time they try to load it. Finally, the access options let you specify whether other people can edit your map or not, or if they're prevented from seeing it at all.

Marker edit panel

Once the set is created, it'll show up in Current sets section, and you can click the edit button to start adding your markers. To add a marker, click the New marker button, and then click on the map where you want to create it. Once it's created, setting the name will change what text shows up when you mouse over the marker. The type determines which icon it shows. Finally, the building field sets what thumbnail image is shown when the marker is selected, as well as what loot information is shown, if any exists. Once you've finished making those changes to each marker, click the Save button. Then, when you're done with editing all of the markers, click Save markers. You can then click Finish editing to go back to the normal map.

With all of that done, you now have a map with your own markers on it! To share it with your friends, you can click the Share button in the Marker sets windows, and it'll give you a URL that will load the set for them when they go to it. If you set a password, make sure to give it to them too, because it will ask them for it when they click your Share link.

Hopefully all of this makes some sense to everyone, and more importantly, I hope you'll all enjoy finally being able to share your own maps with friends. There's more stuff planned for this soon; once finished, you'll be able to create paths as well. I've still got a long list of new features and improvements to work on, and I'm looking forward to rolling out more of these updates soon.

Nice, thank you! Being able to draw lines, arrows, squares, .. for tactical talk would be nice.

Also, temporary markers like players, snipers, squads, ...

You should add the ability to search for custom markers. That way you can just search for the name of the custom marker and the map will center on it, making it easy to find

How about a search for custom markers? I cant seem to just search for the name of my custom marker. That would be nice and having the map center on it would be good.

Good stuff. Great feature, but as has been said, the main thing I would use this for is camp marking, and few to no camps are within the current maps boarders.

What dobbelmoral said, add the 'rest' of the map.

Also, why are there buildings and vehicles way up there? (can be seen if you zoom all the way out http://i.imgur.com/AqySR.jpg )

Also, can you guys add an button so the markers are separated from the others, e.g. if I add a tractor it goes away with the 'spawn location tractors' when I click on Vechiles/Tractors.

I would like to be able to see just my markers and not the default ones.

I was also wondering why the markers are not a button instead of being under controls, might be more intuitive if it was there..

Wow, nice! Looks like the "make it work" part is done. ;)

May I suggest adding a set of generic loot icons? E.g. one icon for each of these: food, medical supplies, tools, optics*, clothes, backpacks, weapons, ammo, spare parts, trash, bear trap, barricades and wood. Having some generic map icons - pin, arrow, etc. - would also be nice.

  • Binos, rangefinder and NVGs

Taking about range finding... may we have a distance measurement tool? :)

Two very important changes need to be made before I can make much use of this feature.

  1. We need the grids inside the large grids to be just like the ingame map. So if I drop a tent in (100,100), I can easily find that grid on the db map as well.

  2. As others have said we need the whole map. This map doesn't even reach the dam, so theres not much you can mark.

Good job otherwise.

When opening a custom marker set from the URL, the default markers should be hidden. This would make sharing sets much much easier. Aside from that, this is amazing and I've been wanting something like this for a while now, thanks!

Add extra icons like someone said here above, but not only what he said, I'd like to be able to put on my location and if I share it with my friends they can add their location as well.. so maybe icons of players in different colors or something like that could work.

Doesn't seem to work for me. Clicking the drop down menu does nothing. Tried disabling adblockers

Edit: I use Chrome, if that helps

Can you add all buildings of a certain type, or all buildings above x loot spots ?

nice update, next could we have a shared map? so multiple users can edit once they enter a password - its a bit hectic linking multiple urls as different people want to share stuff throughout a large squad.

M00NIE, you can already do that. Whoever created the map can click the Update button in the "Your sets" list and change the access to "View & edit". Then, anyone that can view the map (has entered the password) can also edit it.

FOR PEOPLE WHO CANT PLACE MARKERS READ THIS: If your wondering why you cant place Markers down is because you need to make a account. Simple as that.
